Concert Review

This koncert review and others from Dave Davies' solo tours starting in 1997 were originally published in the Kinks Preservation Society internet mailing list digest. This digest is archived at Dave Emlen's Unofficial Kinks Web Site, under the link labeled Kinks Fans ... KPS Mailing List. I have made some edits for context.

Off for a rock 'n' roll weekend of two Dave shows, Friday night at The Chance in Poughkeepsie, NY, and Saturday night at Club Bene in South Amboy, NJ. They were great shows, like the three others I've seen of Dave.

The friend who accompanied me on my weekend road trip to the rock and roll cities commented that Dave was jamming more and playing longer versions of the songs. The addition of "I'm Not Like Everybody Else" to the set list helped; he played this for the first time at this show.

I love the very first sound of each of his shows. Dave comes on stage, takes his guitar, turns his back to the audience and his face to his amplifier, and lets out a chord on his guitar that rips through the building and reverberates with feedback for as long as Dave wants to let it. It's Dave's way of making an announcement: boys and girls, if you like guitar, you've come to the right show.

On the other hand, part of the appeal of this show is that for a segment of the show Dave picks up an acoustic guitar and does a beautiful set of some quieter songs. These songs include "Death of a Clown," "Young and Innocent Days," "Fortis Green," "Strangers," and others. The acoustic set does vary somewhat from show to show depending on what Dave feels like playing and probably how's he reading the audience. These acoustic sets really showcase Dave's singing as well as his command of pace, and illuminate his quieter side.

Dave's also making some changes to familiar Kinks songs, and although many of these changes are subtle they're his way of putting his stamp on the songs. In "Picture Book," right after the line "a picture of you in your birthday suit," he has put in a little mischievous "ooh!" that's not on the record. Just a slightly naughty take on an otherwise perfectly innocent moment.

This show gets the award for the most difficult show to get to. While driving from Cape Cod to upstate New York, I encountered a fairly serious snowstorm. By the time I got to Poughkeepsie and found the venue, my nerves were shot. But once I got inside, and saw some familiar faces on the big dance floor in front of the high stage, I started to feel just fine.

God Save The Kink!
