Concert Review

The State Theatre is a classy place, an old converted movie theater. It has a roomy and fairly high stage. The dance floor in front of the stage provided plenty of standing room for those who like to be close to the stage. Behind the dance floor the seating area, with tables, was raised so that people could see well, and there was even a balcony with more good visibility.

Although the tickets didn't say anything about not allowing photos, a female security guard actually came to me during the concert and took my camera from around my neck. This uncalled-for camera snatch leaves me with a bad feeling about the place. I always respect a no cameras rule and she could have just told me not to take pictures. Security took their job a little TOO seriously in this place; I wasn't allowed to leave the building with a bottle of water I had purchased at the club!

At the end of the main set Dave went off stage (it must be a relief to play a club that has a real backstage) and the band started "Living on a Thin Line" and played for at least a minute, building up for a dramatic entrance when Dave came back on stage to sing the song.

There was a funny incident that showed how smooth Dave is on stage. A woman fan leaped on stage as if she wanted to kiss him. A security guard hustled her off the stage, but Dave's reaction was to fake stumbling backwards as if he were about to faint -- it really was cute!

This show was a little longer than yesterday (20 songs) and we were treated to the "Money" - "David Watts" medley. David Jenkins got into "David Watts," in a big way. David is usually pretty matter-of-fact on stage, but you can always tell when he's playing one of his favorites! After the show, when David came back on stage to put away his gear, there was loud applause from the crowd. He reacted predictably by covering his face with his hands, but with an embarrassed grin. Then several fans asked him and Kristian Hoffman to sign the Rock Bottom Live CD.
