Concert Review

Dave has played Maxwell's four times. I've been to them all. It's not a bad location. If you have a detailed map you can find it easily; without a detailed map, there is no hope. The city of Hoboken is really quite attractive with its interesting architecture and view of Manhattan across the river, and good places to eat, too, including the club itself.

But the venue itself isn't much. The stage is small and there's no backstage. The band has to fight its way through the crowd from their "green room" which is downstairs. The crowd was a little aggressive. Twice concertgoers tried to move in front of the group of fans who'd been at the club since mid-afternoon and we had to tell them to move back. The sound in this venue is definitely among the worst he's played.

Lava Baby opened again. I enjoyed their set again, and they played an encore song that I thought was their best song, and they were honestly enthusiastic about opening for Dave, but I have one question -- why so many foot pedals? The guitarist has an array of about eight foot pedals. Even the female lead singer, who plays guitar like Ray Davies used to play guitar in The Kinks during the arena years (in other words, mostly uses it as a prop), has about five foot pedals. Yeesh, these kids and their technology. That old guy they were warming up for uses one foot pedal and his guitar sounds just dandy.

The show itself included some nice additions. He did "Love Me Till the Sun Shines" which has always been one of my favorite live Dave songs, "Strangers" which seemed to my ear to be a little rushed, and the wonderful "Mindless Child of Motherhood," another number where David Jenkins goes nuts on stage! Dave is seeming a little tired of "Death of a Clown," or maybe he's trying to vary it just so he WON'T get bored, because he completely skipped the keyboard intro which has become a bit of funny stage business between him and Kristian.

This crowd wasn't very patient with the quiet songs. During the incredibly beautiful "Young and Innocent Days," instead of listening attentively, they were yelling for "Thin Line" and "Mindless Child" (at least they were requesting Dave songs!!!). Dave had to pretend he was ending the show right there to get them to quiet down. Despite this lack of attentiveness, he did eight songs during the "acoustic" set (more than at any other show during this tour). For whatever reason, Dave obviously likes Maxwell's because he played the longest show of the tour so far -- 21 songs.

This was a better set list than usual - 12 of 21 songs were Dave compositions - omitting "All Day & All of the Night" and doing "Mindless Child" instead was a HUGE improvement.
