Concert Review

Dave was the first of three acts and started so early he was through before dark. Dave mentioned that the Kinks played here during the "Tent Tour" of '95 (the Kinks' last real tour). It was a roomy stage-in-the-round, which revolved, slowly, first one way, then it stopped, revolved the other way.

Dave only played 45 minutes, and he only played 10 songs, but it was surprisingly satisfying. It was nice to sit for a change. The sound was exceptionally good, and as I'm usually crammed up against the stage, it was fun for me to watch the band from different angles as the stage revolved. (The green book that Kristian keeps on his music stand is filled with scribbled chord progessions and such, as opposed to actual sheet music -- I'd been wondering about that.)

The crowd were mostly fans of Mountain (the second act) with a few there for Felix Cavaliere's Rascals (the third act). But Dave won them over immediately. It was great to see an alien crowd react so positively! The guys sitting behind me went from "Dave Who?" before the show to "WOW!" after the show.

Afterwards we all hung around outside since none of us were interested in the following acts. Kristian was obviously pleased that none of us were interested in Mountain's "cowbell rock."

It was the 50th birthday of Frank Reda ("Freaky Frank") and his twin brother, and they were there with 50th birthday t-shirts, and sporting pins that Michigan fan Leslie had made for Freaky Frank's Fiftieth.
