Review

The Stompers played their annual Thanksgiving show at the historic Bull Run Restaurant in Shirley, MA. It's a great venue, and it was a great show. The Stompers are a lot of fun, and you never know what you're going to hear. Of course they play the familiar favorites from their own recording career, songs that most of these audience goers have loved for decades, but there's always a few surprises from "The Big Book of Rock 'n' Roll." I did my best to write down all the song titles but I can't swear that I got them all! I particularly enjoyed hearing "Let's Rock and Roll," a song recorded by Rock E. Rollins, Sal Baglio's alias from a few years back. Sal also demonstrated his versatility by performing an almost-solo version of "When You Walk in the Room," the Searchers ballad (written by Jackie DeShannon).

Jeremy Brown, pianist, was missing tonight. He's had recent surgery to repair a nerve problem and is on the mend. We hope we'll see him again next time! Meanwhile, Dave Friedman, who flies in every year from California for this show, doubled up on organ and piano, taking a fab solo in "Temptation," and tossing in some lovely softshoe on top of it all.

The newest member of the band is the bearded Sam Wood, Cape Cod's own. Sam says he also plays with Cape Cod-based Chandler Travis Philharmonic and the Spampinato Brothers. I'm looking forward to seeing him perform with one or both of these other bands soon.

All four musicians came on stage all dandied up, wearing ties and suit jackets, but within one song everyone had tossed aside these extra articles of clothing. Sal was also wearing a debonaire hat that wound up on Sam's cymbal stand.

Today was the 39th anniversary of The Stompers (founded in 1977! were you there?). Sal promises an extra good show for next year's milestone 40th anniversary, and is asking for requests for that show.
