The Recap

Review

The Figgs played fifty-one songs over the course of a double show. The first show started a few minutes after 4 pm and ended sometime around 6. Billed as "kid friendly," this show did enjoy the attendance of a number of little tykes as well as an enthusiastic and packed adult Figgs crowd. Mike Gent joked that they don't have any children's songs in their catalog.

The second show started a few minutes after 7 and went until the last minute they could have possibly played and still had time to break down the stage to clear out for a dance band coming in at 10 pm. Did you notice I said they played 51 songs? Who plays 51 songs these days, even in a double show? It's been a few years since I've seen these guys perform as a band, and one thing hasn't changed -- their energy and love of performing. I think they're a little more talkative than they used to be, engaging in some good-natured teasing of one another, and of the audience, but the enjoyable stage banter didn't cut into the number of songs performed.

The sets were mostly Figgs songs, including many classic crowd pleasers and a generous number of songs from the new album the guys are working on, set to be a triple (!) album. They also did a few covers, ranging from the everybody-sing-along to the more obscure.

The shows were thoroughly enjoyable. Mike, Pete, and Pete have a real mental telepathy among themselves where they seem to know exactly what each other are thinking. They are a tight, tight combo. They presented a hugely generous helping of their literate, melodic, energetic, loud, and fun song catalog to a very appreciative audience. I am hoping to see them again in the near future.

I love the Burren as a venue. Easy to get to from the Davis Sq. T station (Boston area subway), solid pub food menu, friendly staff, and surprisingly good stage lighting resulting in a pretty good set of photos.
