Welcome To the Circus

Review

During the last year and a half of the worldwide killer pandemic, local Cape Cod musician Zoë Lewis has been performing regular streaming shows on line, presenting an hour of music on Facebook that has been truly entertaining. She has recruited a number of other Provincetown musicians to perform these shows with her, calling this rotating corps of talented musicians the Social Distancers. She has performed these shows from her home in Provincetown, and the other performers joining her have been in her yard outside the window -- thus the "social distancers." Besides being a very talented musician and songwriter, she has a truly joyful sense of playfulness, something we all need during these crazy times.

Tonight she had a band of three musicians, stand up bass, drums, and clarinet/saxophone. The clarinet player was Mark Chenevert, whom we have seen back up Zoë before. I apologize for not catching the names of the other musicians. An additional musician performed on the saw on a few songs. That was an unexpected treat! Zoë herself played keyboard, guitar, and washboard, and she also has a real talent for humming in a way that sounds just like a trombone.

It was a real pleasure to hear Zoë play a number of the songs that are often included in her live shows. She told some touching stories and some funny stories about the creation of the songs. She had a group of children come up on stage to participate in "Plastic Soup" by dancing around and holding up the sign "NO" in response to the inquiry of whether we want soup made of plastic resulting from so much trash in the ocean. The show wrapped up with a poignant tribute to Zoë's friend Ilona, who passed away recently at the age of 101; the song "Eyelashes" is a tip of the cap to Ilona's habit of dressing up her eyelashes with locks of her hair.

Hearing a show at the bandstand at the Salt Pond Visitor Center, headquarters of the Cape Cod National Seashore, was a real treat. There were plenty of rows of seats affording really great views for everyone, and plenty of room for the band. The show started at 7:00 pm, which is getting a little late since the sun is going down a bit earlier by this part of the summer. With about 15 minutes left to go, the lights came on to illuminate the band for the last few songs.
