"All My Loving - Till There Was You - She Loves You"

"Yesterday"

Review

The audience tonight was treated to a truly stellar performance from the eastern Massachusetts Beatles impersonators calling themselves Studio Two. This show was a special one since it was the sixtieth anniversary, to the day, of The Beatles' historic appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show.

Tonight's show began with the image of Ed Sullivan projected on the screen behind the stage. The video of that historic TV show continued with entertaining vintage ads (shaving cream, shoe polish) that had the audience laughing out loud. Then Ed came back on and uttered those very familiar words:

..."the excitement stirred by these youngsters from Liverpool -- tonight we will be twice entertained by them -- right now and in the second half of our show -- ladies and gentlemen, Studio Two!"

The four band members ran out onto the stage, Paul counted down eagerly into his microphone, and they joyfully started into the historically accurate medley, as performed by The Beatles sixty years ago, of "All My Loving - Till There Was You - She Loves You." The band played for about an hour, took a break, then played about another hour. The auditorium was close to full, with multi-generational families, including some first generation Beatles fans with their grandchildren. I was sitting next to a fan who had seen them at Suffolk Downs; when I asked her if she could hear them, she said "a little bit."

A fun twist on the usual Studio Two show was toward the end of the second set when, during "Roll Over Beethoven," the musicians traded instruments. "Ringo" came down off the drum platform and took John's guitar; "Paul" took over on drums; "John" (real life Stephen Murray), who I'm sure is not left-handed, took over on Paul's left-handed bass -- and they were having a blast!

I didn't really know what to expect from the Chapman Middle School, but it turned out to be quite a good venue, with an extra large stage. As you can tell from the pictures, the stage was well lit by a good lighting system with the color going from red, to purple, to green, to blue. Studio Two has been a knock-out show every time I've seen them; this time, with the extra large audience and the extra special anniversary, it gave a bit of extra energy to the performance of these four excellent musicians.
