Review

Three singer-songwriters shared the stage equally on a miserable rainy night in the mid-Cape, and that made for a very entertaining evening of music. All three know what they're about when it comes to singing, writing songs, and playing the guitar. Susan Cattaneo has a beautifully pure singing voice, a touch of mischief, and an urge not to let go of that bit of rock 'n roll. Rod Abernethy has mighty guitar chops (he played a couple of instrumentals) and a real sense of humor. Kim Moberg has a deeply poetic soul, an amazingly light touch on the guitar, a sweet singing voice, and a commitment to tell the story of her indigenous ancestors. All three have an uplifting way of telling stories with their music.

The three performers took turns, and a couple of times one would introduce a theme that then wended its way casually through the next few songs, but without a lot of pressure on anybody. The themes varied widely, ranging from whiskey, to family, to topics in between. Each performer did four songs, then there was a brief intermission. The Cape Cod Cultural Center is in a former bank building and it was not the usual folk club setting, watching these performers in front of the old bank vault. There are quite a few exhibits scattered throughout the building, including one about the old saltworks, a prime industry on the Cape in the 1800s (making salt out of seawater by the use of solar evaporation). After the intermission the format resumed, with each singer performing three songs, and the night wrapped up with an exquisite rendition of The Beatles' "Let It Be" performed by Rod, Kim, and Susan together.

I am told this is the third time Rod, Susan, and Kim have played together at this venue in this format, and I hope they will do it again, since they put on a fantastic show. Meanwhile, since Kim is local I am sure I will have a chance to see her perform in the near future.
