Concert Review
Back to the greater Boston area for back-to-back shows at the Sit 'n Bull Friday and Saturday. More great music, but the really great thing about the Bull is the feeling of energy in the crowd; this feels like home for Kinks fans. Dave felt it, too, saying on Friday that it felt like he was "playing for family." When Dave comes into that club, even just coming in off the street, all heads turn and a hush falls. A tall man with long, flowing dark hair and a long, sweeping dark coat, with his long, catlike strides, he wouldn't have to be the star to dominate the room.
This concert included a couple of incidents that were a bit distracting. The band took a stab at "Rats" -- playing just one verse -- and frankly, it wasn't very good. "Rats" is a noisy song, but this version was all noise, no song. Another bad thing tonight was an audience moment: soneone who'd clearly had too much to drink stormed the stage and started grabbing at Dave. The person was quickly removed from the stage, but Dave was apparently a bit rattled; no wonder the band finished up with YRGM as part of the regular set, and we got no return to the stage for an encore.
Aside from those couple of incidents, the show was up to Dave's usual standards. During this tour Dave is letting loose on guitar on a lot of songs, but the best guitar song has to be a toss-up between "I'm Not Like Everybody Else" and "Milk Cow Blues." He's showing his singing ability, too; I'd say best vocal song is a toss-up between the lovely "Soothe Sayer" from Dave's new-age work Purusha and the Spiritual Planet and the klassic Kinks tune "Strangers."
Dave continued to enjoy interacting with the audience in these venues where the fans are sometimes inches in front of him, and the back of the venue is still within a very short distance. During "See My Friends," Dave compliments the audience with a sweeping hand gesture, claiming us as his friends.
