Concert Review

A big thumbs up to the opening act tonight, Sal Baglio, formerly of The Stompers, who did an entertaining 30-minute solo set that made me want to come back when he returns to the Bull on July 16 with his new band. He did a song called "A Date With Elvis" that you must hear if you get a chance. Note: Sal's band The Stompers are still very much alive and well as of this update in 2020.

This is live theater, and when a speaker wire wouldn't stay in, Peter The Soundman had his assistant Chuck sit behind the speaker and hold the wire in for the entire show. He gets the award for heroic action in a crisis. I got a picture of him (link to the photo gallery is below).

We were privileged to have among us Bill and Julie Orton and Russell Smith of the Official Kinks Fan Club from England. But an even more remarkable guest was in the house tonight. Doug Hinman came in with a companion, and I found myself being introduced by Doug to "my friend Peter." While shaking his hand it occurred to me that I was shaking hands with a member of the Rock 'N Roll Hall of Fame. I had the chance to converse with the charming Mr. Quaife a bit over the course of the two nights at the Bull, tonight and the next show the following evening. Within about 5 minutes we discovered that we are both baseball fans and developed an instantaneous rivalry, as he's a Blue Jays fan and I'm Red Sox all the way. In fact, his parting words to me on Thursday were to gloat to me that the Blue Jays had won that night, 3-0. I also had the fun of overhearing Dave Jenkins conversing with Pete about bass playing, undoubtedly getting his input on what to play on certain Dave songs. What did Pete have to say about Dave's show at the end of the evening? He said "I was only mildly bored."

Among the musical highlights, Dave played a few bars of the intro to "Low Budget"; and "Dead End Street" was included as part of the encore set.

Another fun aspect of the evening was the introduction of the newest member of the Raving Dave Fan Kollective: Michelle Weaver of Florida, whose stated purpose for coming to New England is to get married next week, but who seemed more than mildly excited about her first solo Dave shows. (Fritz, get an RDF number for this young lady.) A good looking brunette in a sundress sitting where Dave could easily see her, she was the recipient of a lot of smiles and winks from the star. (Dave is SUCH A FLIRT.) She was able to get an autograph from Dave after the show and I had to tie a string to her ankle so she wouldn't float away.
