Concert Review
I traveled to South Station on the Boston MBTA (public transit) to attend this brief, free lunchtime performance by the rock 'n' roll genius Warren Zevon. The highlight of this show for me was that after arriving on the early side, I had the chance to chat up Warren, who was hanging around waiting for noon to arrive so that he could start. Although I interacted with Warren a couple of other times, this was the only time I had a real chance to talk to him. He was friendly and approachable.
Warren began his performance by commenting that this was an unusual venue. Playing a public transit station at noontime was not the usual gig. He referred to what he was doing as a "puppet show in a mall." The show itself consisted of seven songs drawn from recent albums and the oldies but goodies that casual fans expect. Warren's playing and singing was up to his usual quality standards, but the noise from the passing subway trains was occasionally distracting. The folding chairs in front of the temporary stage were filled with some hardcore Zevonistas and the rest were casual passersby looking for free entertainment. It's my impression everyone went home happy. Apparently Warren himself then travelled to a local radio station to play a second abbreviated afternoon gig.
