Concert Review
The koncert reviews from Dave's solo tours starting in 1997 were originally published on Dave Emlen's Unofficial Kinks Web Site, under the link labeled Kinks Fans --> KPS Mailing List.
The first show of Dave Davies' summer 2000 tour was in the Swingset, a Long Island club that featured the best sound of any club during the tour. The instruments, especially the keyboards, all sounded crystal clear, something that wasn't true at every venue. The tickets were expensive; $45 for a table in front of the stage. The club had the most attractive stage of any in the tour, a backdrop with a silhouette of an urban skyline, which looks remarkably 3-dimensional and realistic in the pictures I took.
The keyboard player who was part of the tour in the fall of '97 is back, Kristian Hoffman, who is a respected artist in his own right (see www.eggbert.com for information on his solo records). He's a stylish keyboard player who was compared to Nicki Hopkins by Dave Jenkins, the bass player. Kristian replaced David Nolte who had played keyboards and second guitar on the previous couple of tours. Kristian is a pure keyboard player and a very good one, so where the band has lost the multi-instrumental versatility (and warm personality) of David Nolte, it's gained the excellent playing of Kristian. Kristian also has a great stage personality, interacting with Dave humorously during many songs.
The band has a new guitar tech, Jonathan Lea, who also played second guitar on about four or five songs each night, filling out the sound for songs like "You're Looking Fine," "Tired of Waiting," "Mindless Child," and "I'm Not Like Everybody Else." The band also brought their own soundman, Pete Magdaleno, whose skill was undoubtedly responsible for the good sound throughout the tour (but especially at this club).
The big musical surprise of this first night's show was the very first song. The warmup tape ended with "Tapas" -- Rafaela and I nudged one another and whispered, "You know what comes after 'Tapas' on the album" ... but I didn't believe Dave would actually play "Charity" until he tore into the first few notes of the song. Rafaela, I'm sorry if I bruised your arm grabbing you at that moment in excitement, but "Charity" is one of the two songs I most wanted to hear Dave play that he hadn't played in previous tours (the other is "Perfect Strangers" -- which appears on his written set list -- maybe next tour).
Other highlights for me were meeting Olga [English superfan Olga Ruocco] for the first time and, of course, seeing all my New York area Kinky friends for the first time in a year. I spent the evening handing out fake money with Dave's picture which David Fleming and I had designed. Jerry Birenz informs me that my fake money is illegal, but that he will defend me if the treasury comes after me! Thanks for the free legal advice, Jerry!
God Save The Kink!
