Concert Review
Also known as The Great Dave Monsoon.
A group of about 20 fans waited outside in a pouring rain, with thunder and lightning, for the doors to open. A couple of people, including one guy on a bicycle, came to the door, having been told by a club employee on the phone to "come right down and buy tickets," only to be turned away by the unconscionably rude nightclub staff, who under no circumstance were about to let anyone in, no matter how bad a gale was blowing! Second-generation fan Miriam was so soaked she went looking for a convenience store that might have clothes she could buy.
It was "raining" on stage too -- the roof was leaking (more than a drip, too) just about where David Jenkins was going to stand. Fortunately this serious safety hazard let up by the time the show started.
The first warmup was Virgil Cain, a basic medium-to-loud-rock four-piece. They get my "best warmup band" of the tour award. They all smiled and looked like they were having fun! I like it when a band names themselves after a song lyric. (But they had too many foot pedals.) The second warmup was the now-familiar and still enjoyable Lava Baby.
A familiar feature of Boston-area Kinks shows is local fan Diane uncorking a bottle of champagne and handing it to Dave. But tonight she flubbed the handoff by poor timing -- too bad, Diane, try again with older brother when he comes to town!
A highlight from Dave's set was "Love Me Till the Sun Shines," where Dave and David Jenkins play the exact same notes, doubling on guitar-and-bass. Dave introduced "Living a Lie" as a "song about fear, isolation and oppression -- all my favorite things." During the other new song, "No More Mysteries," the crowd were too loud -- they just couldn't seem to shut up and listen -- and Dave got distracted and only played about a verse of the song. The crowd was big but they were far from the best crowd he's played to. Again Dave played a too-short acoustic set, and I think the crowd had something to do with that.
Although he played 18 1/2 songs to yesterdays's 17, yesterday's show was much better.
For a lot of reasons I hope Dave doesn't play Harper's Ferry again -- there are many better places in the Boston area.
