Concert Review

The extremely hot weather made wandering around this interesting college town less inviting, and after spending a while in used record stores my Concert Going Partners and I wound up sitting languidly in a classic diner sipping milk shakes.

While waiting in line to get in, we could hear the sound check from inside, and the band played bits of "Johnny Thunder" and "Destroyer." Sometimes the best stuff gets used up in the sound check!

Dave has played the Iron Horse once before, in the summer of '98. This was a better show. (No tornado warnings this time.) It was one of the best of this year's tour. The Iron Horse is a sitting venue. We munched on delicious sandwiches as we were waiting, hoping everyone would be finished eating before the show started. There was no warmup band.

Dave was obviously more relaxed than during the Village Underground show two nights before, and it showed in increased banter with the audience -- and with the band. "Death of a Clown" was once again a song, not a performance piece, with a chance for Dave to interact playfully with Kristian. "Kristian has been practicing this intro for six months," said Dave, and Kristian made a face as if he was scared to death, but then played the intro very nicely indeed. "You're Looking Fine" is always a chance for Dave to flirt with the audience -- he usually searches for a "beautiful woman" before the song, and during the song makes a habit of declaring himself "fickle" and looking for another beautiful woman! He introduced "Tired of Waiting" as the "perfect rock/pop song" and "See My Friends" as "a different kind of love song."

As he was starting "Living a Lie," a female heckler shouted out, "Dave, are you a dedicated follower of fashion?" Dave graciously deflected her with: "No, darling, but you obviously are."

A nice addition to the set list was "Strangers," in response to superfan Rafaela's request. It sounded better (less rushed) than the other night at Maxwell's.

The sound in this club is very good -- one of the benchmarks I listen for is Jim and David Jenkins' backup vocals on "Living on a Thin Line," and they were crystal clear (and sounded great).
