Concert Review
The venue for tonight was the Foxwoods Casino somewhere in eastern Connecticut. One of the band members described it as "not hideously ugly." Not only was the atmosphere not very rock-and-roll, the parking lot is about a half mile from the door so you have to take a shuttle back and forth. But it was easy to ignore the fact that you were in a casino, once inside the actual club, which is called B.B. King's (not to be confused with B.B. King's in Manhattan).
The club was nice, with a big wooden dance floor and also plenty of seats, a big stage, fun lighting, and a backdrop behind the stage that cycled through different phases including a very attractive starry background. There was no warmup band. Dave started exactly on time at 8:00. After the last two nights in which the band played basically flawlessly, this was a rather sloppy show. Dave flubbed more lyrics than he usually does and even flubbed some of the guitar parts. There were a couple of little glitches during the show that might have thrown him off a little. He still had no acoustic guitar. At one point during the show, the light that was on Dave's music stand fell off. He was about to start the song "Bug." Dave doesn't really look at the music stand except for the new songs, so this was the one time he needed it. He looked around for the roadie but the roadie was nowhere in sight, so Kristian, thinking quickly, stepped up and fixed Dave's light for him while Dave was giving the intro to "Bug" and telling about the new album.
I'm not too happy with two of the songs he's been doing. One is "Susannah's Still Alive," which doesn't sound right without a harmonica. David Nolte is busy playing bass and I guess Brian the guitar tech doesn't play the harmonica, but why doesn't Kristian make harmonica-like sounds on the keyboard? Or better yet, they could play "Funny Face" instead. The other song I'm a little disappointed in is "Set Me Free," which Dave hasn't played in a couple of years, and he has probably forgotten that he used to leave out the lyrics "little girl," which had the effect of changing the tempo of the song to something more bluesy.
A highlight tonight was "In You I Believe," which Dave impulsively included as a quiet number after "Bug."
After the show was over, the club personnel had disco lights and dance music going and the door opening for an entirely different crowd within about five minutes. They didn't rush us out the door, however, so it was nothing more than an amusing shift in atmosphere until the Raving Dave Fans all left on our own.
