Carrie Rodriguez ~ 2009 January 24 ~ Narrows Center for the Arts, MA
Review
Carrie Rodriguez played the Narrows, that excellent venue up a rickety flight of stairs in an old mill building in the shadow of the Braga Bridge in Fall River. The show was opened by Mark Erelli, a singer/songwriter with a good voice and a set of serious songs. He played a four-string guitar, and then Carrie's band pulled out an identical instrument. Had never seen such a guitar before, and now I saw two in one night.
Carrie played fiddle and guitar. Her songs were from the Americana or alt-country style, well written and melodic. She looked stylish and beautiful in a frilly green party dress. In addition to herself, her band included two European musicians, the handsome Hans on guitar, and Javier with a jaunty hat, multi-instrumentalist, who played keyboards, percussion and alto sax. Carrie sang well and her band was very accomplished and very entertaining to watch. All three had good on-stage personalities and interacted well. Carrie's vocals were unpretentious and real. A great discovery! We got some nice pictures too, so please do scroll through the slide show to the right.
