Review
I've been a fan of Jill Sobule for a number of years and have seen her solo a few times. This time she was playing a duo show with another singer/songwriter, Erin McKeown.
The show was at Club Passim, Harvard Square's venerable old folk club, formerly Club 47. I hadn't been to this place in lo these many years. Since I was going on my own, I snagged a single ticket at a front table. Got there early for good waitress service, and had a delicious vegan meal while waiting for the show to start.
Jill and Erin played one song together -- "One Night Only" -- which they claimed to have written a few minutes earlier in the dressing room. It sounded great. Jill played the shiny electric guitar that you can see in a few of the pictures. Then Erin left the stage and Jill played a solo set accompanying herself on guitar. During her set she asked for a volunteer to come up on stage to hold some lyrics for a couple of new songs she had just written. A young woman named Jenn volunteered; you can see her grinning ear to ear in some of the pictures. One of the new songs was the wicked "Wendell Lee," an exposé of some former lovers of Jill. Another was "Billy Theme's," a song about Billy Tipton, a transgendered jazz musician. After Jill's set was over, Erin played a set, accompanying herself on guitar and keyboards. Both performers were very entertaining. Then they played an encore set together of one or two songs.
