Absolutely Beautiful Friggin' Day
Review
The Slambovians played another extra good show at one of their favorite venues, the Bull Run in out of the way Shirley, Mass., the place with the covered bridge out back, the wedding reception vibe, and the really great music.
It was a delight to hear several songs slated for the upcoming album. Although some of these songs have existed for years, and in a couple of cases have been performed in the past, they have never been recorded, and I am really looking forward to the recorded versions. These songs include "Look Around," "Rainy Grey" (on which Joziah plays bass), and "Absolutely Beautiful Friggin' Day." According to Joziah, the band will be taking a brief hiatus to work on the new album, but it's really only about a month without any shows. The next shows on their schedule are Joziah/Tink duo shows, which should be very interesting!
An audience member mentioned to Joziah during the intermission that Dave Davies of the Kinks was having his 70th birthday. In response, Joziah began the encore set with a spontaneous version of The Kinks' "Waterloo Sunset," and then The Beatles' "Birthday." It's always fun to hear Joziah's spontaneous improvs from the deep well of 20th century popular music. Then, energized by "Birthday," the band quickly decided to ditch the "sissy song" they were planning to end with (undoubtedly "The Invisible") and played the rave-up "Very Happy Now" medley instead. This fan thinks that's a really great way to end the show!
There were four Slambovian newbies at my table, including one woman who said she's a mandolin player and was looking forward to seeing this band's mandolin player. I think she probably left her socks behind under the table after the show.
