Review

The Circus brought the four-piece version of the band to the great new location of the South Shore Folk Music Club. The presence of drummer Felipe Torres makes them a rock band, even in the absence of bass player Bob Torsello, who (I was told) was busy with reality (day job). Although I very much enjoyed seeing the trio show without the drummer last month, it's just better with the rhythm section.

A fun moment was a cover of an obscure country song that was a favorite in the musical Longo household when little Joe was growing up, "High On a Hilltop" by the Osborne Brothers. Another highlight was an apparently new song, "Everyone's Dumb In Their Own Special Way." I wasn't crazy about the two Dylan covers; it's always been my opinion that with a songwriter of the level of Joziah, no band needs to be giving space in their setlist to a songwriter that every other band in the world covers.

The venue was just about sold out, and as usual, the fans had a lot of fun. Joziah was especially witty, I thought, and when introducing my favorite Circus song ("Tink I Know It's You") gave a particularly good intro about honoring the power of women in this song. In general the show followed the familiar pattern from the last year-plus, since Sharkey returned after his year-long hiatus. Although I very much like the unrecorded songs they've been playing (songs slated for their next album), it seems to me they're playing it a little safe with not including some of the other unrecorded songs they've debuted over the last three years or so. I especially wish they'd play "Brilliantly Dumb." But I don't get to pick.

This was my second visit to the new location of the South Shore Folk Music Club in Duxbury, MA, just a few miles up Rte. 3A from their old location. There's plenty of parking, comfortable seating, yummy munchables during intermission, a very friendly staff, and no silly rules about cameras or videos. This is a venue worth supporting with a membership.
