Review

I had just seen Maura and Pete Kennedy perform at the New Bedford Folk Festival about a week ago, but seeing them again in a different format was an appealing idea. They had two other musicians along with them, both second generation folk musicians, both with solid chops on vocals, guitar, and mandolin. These two were Adam Traum (son of Happy Traum) and Colin Gilmore (son of Jimmy Dale Gilmore). The press for the show mentioned that Pete and Maura are NOT the offspring of John & Jackie Kennedy!

The show opened with a half hour set by Adam and Colin, who traded off lead vocals on a handful of well presented and enjoyable songs. They each played guitar on most of the songs, switching over to mandolin for a few. They then sat down and The Kennedys followed up with a half hour set of their music (I kept a set list, above, of this set since I am familiar with Pete and Maura's catalog). Then there was an intermission, and all four musicians performed a final 45 minute set together, trading off between Kennedys numbers and songs by the other two musicians, backing up one another on guitar, mandolin, and (in Pete's case) lap steel. A highlight of this set was a cover of the Velvet Underground's song "Sunday Morning" on which Colin and Maura shared lead vocals, and Pete accompanied the song on the lap steel. The quartet finished up with the traditional song "Ragged But Right" (popularized by George Jones), from which they took their name.

It was a fun show with four excellent musicians, and for me it was enjoyable to see Pete and Maura dabble in something different than the usual duo show.
