Review

Gee whiz, the Everly Brothers Experience were good. Led by brothers Dylan and Zachary Zmed, this five-man band exists to preserve and perform the great music of Don and Phil Everly, while entertaining the audience with a giant helping of humor straight out of the Smothers Brothers.

The band performed twenty-eight songs, all of which were associated with the Everly Brothers, either as their giant hits, their b-sides, songs they wrote themselves, and Christmas classics that were included in their catalog. I enjoyed all of it, including the Christmas songs, but it would be nice to see them again during other parts of the year when more songs specifically of the Everly Brothers would be featured.

These two brothers had a great stage rapport and were very funny. As the show went along, they told stories of Don and Phil's career, how their hits happened, how their misses happened. They included stories about the songwriters who penned some of the brothers' greatest songs, including Felice and Boudleaux Bryant, Roy Orbison, and others.

One thing I learned, to my surprise, was that a few hits in a much more recent time frame were Everlys originals, including Linda Ronstadt's "When Will I Be Loved" and (astonishly) "Love Hurts" by Nazareth. Drummer Burleigh Drummond got a lead vocal, singing "Merry Christmas Baby" to his lively four-year old daughter, who was in attendance. The band were very good, including a very stylish guitarist whose name I didn't catch, and the bass player who was cool as a cucumber over on stage right.
