Review
This was my first Circus show in almost a year, and they didn't let me down. They played a good long set with a few special treats included for Valentine's Day, including "My Girl" and "Baby Jane." They ended with a raveup, "Alligators," instead of the lullaby, "The Invisible," that they often use for the final song. I enjoyed the somewhat unusual set list as well as the rave-up ending.
The rhythm section was new to me. I was told that these were the two musicians that they brought with them last year for their tour in England, since neither the usual drummer (Felipe) or bass player (Bob) were able to make the trip. I think it's a really good thing for them to have regular backups for these two musicians. The drummer was Matthew Abourezk and the bass player R.J. McCarty. I got some good pictures of both of them, so please check out the photo gallery (link at the bottom of this page).
The venue was sold out, and as usual, the fans were very enthusiastic. When Joziah asked who hadn't seen the band before, not many hands went up. I suspect there were quite a few veterans of the nearby Falcon Ridge Folk Festival in the crowd. There were tables seating four in front of the stage, more seats on a riser behind the floor seats, and elevated rows of seats along the sides. All good sight lines for the 90 or so available seats. Joziah tossed in a couple of crazy improvs, "Tiptoe Through the Tulips" as a lead-in to "Pushing Up Daisies," and the Beatles' "Old Brown Shoe" instead of the "Golden Slumbers" improv they were doing for a couple of years. Introducing the final song, he told a long and very interesting story of how he used to hang out with Daryl Hall and some other topnotch musicians when he was just making his start as a young musician.
