Review
The Figgs are a three piece power pop / rock 'n roll band that have been around for more than a third of a century. The two lead guys, Mike on guitar and Pete on bass, share the songwriting and lead singing duties equally, while Pete Hayes on drums contributes a few songs now and again. A highlight of any show is when Pete gets up from his kit to take a lead vocal; Mike moves over to drums and Pete Donnelly to lead guitar, where those two really let loose on these instruments. Pete Hayes has grown an impressive looking gray beard in the two years since I last saw him.
As the years have gone by the band has evolved from their original punk-based sound to get a bit more melodic and thoughtful, mixing in some more mature, slower tunes along with continuing to create a plentiful serving of power pop / rock 'n roll. They're a hard working trio and continue to produce high quality, very catchy albums on a regular basis. At this show they played several tunes from their upcoming album, which will be available on CD and vinyl in the near future.
This was the first of two shows this evening; unfortunately due to an early morning commitment tomorrow we only stayed for the first show. The Figgs were the last show that Concert Going Partner and I saw before the pandemic, in March 2020, also at the Burren. So it was fitting that they should be one of the very first indoor shows we have seen as the pandemic is easing enough to allow indoor concerts to return. The Burren's website specified that everyone should be vaccinated; unfortunately the doorman didn't check. But the show wasn't sold out (a 4 pm show can sometimes be a hard sell for a rock audience) and in a way this was a good thing, since social distancing was pretty easy to do.
