Review
Maura and Pete's new album Headwinds has been out for a few weeks now, and they've been busy on a new album tour in which they treat the audience to the album played in its entirety. The songs range from Maura's car song with a twist for the modern age, "New Set of Wheels," to Pete's Motown sounding "The Woods and the Wild," to the uptempo "Little Green Bottles," and a range of other musical delights. Definitely worth the 5-year wait since their last studio record. I personally would have liked it if Pete had a lead vocal on one of the songs he wrote for the new record, but that's a minor quibble.
After a brief intermission, Maura and Pete performed a second set featuring a few of their own tunes and a number of favorite covers. Two of their most popular live songs are "Life Is Large" and "Midnight Ghost," and they bookended their second set with these two. In response to an audience request, they performed their deep cut "Dance Around in the Rain," appropriate for the weather. Donovan's saddest-song-ever recorded, "Catch the Wind," and their joyful encore of the Peter Paul & Mary version of "If I Had a Hammer" were other highlights of the second set.
The Stone Church Coffeehouse is easy to find and has abundant on-street parking nearby. Two big tables in the middle of the room were reserved, but Concert Going Partner and I were able to grab a couple of seats off to the side where we had an excellent view, and the sound was great from there, too. It was a good sized and attentive crowd, I'm guessing a sell-out by the modest standards of a church coffeehouse venue. I'd never been to this venue before, but they have an excellent schedule of upcoming performances and it looks like a return visit is probably in my future.
