Review

The Kennedys are continuing their tour promoting their album Headwinds, their first new album since before the pandemic. They've tweaked the format of the show a bit since we saw them at the Stone Church Coffeehouse in September. At that show they played the new album in its entirety in the first set, whereas today they dropped a couple of the slower tunes and moved one tune ("Waging Peace") to the second set, which freed up some room in the show for audience requests in the second set, making for a bit more balance and an overall better show.

I got a wink from the stage for a request I sent in in advance. When buying my tickets on line I noticed the venue was on West Street, which made me think of the West album, which is a favorite of mine, and I've heard Maura say that the song "Jubilee Time" from that album is her favorite of all the songs Pete's ever written, so I emailed a request that they do that one and maybe one or two others from the West album, and the segue from the lively and uptempo "Boddhisatva Blues" worked out perfectly because it contains the phrase "Jubilee Time" in the lyrics -- sometimes these things just work out perfectly.

Another highlight was not a song, but a dramatic reading -- Maura took a turn reading a scene from Pete's new novel, "The Wolf Of Amalfi," a sequel to the book he put out about two years ago. A song I personally was very happy to hear was a cover of a song by the Slambovian Circus of Dreams, written by Joziah Longo, called "Never Fit." They finished up with a rave up of "Midnight Ghost" and their anthem "Stand," on which the very engaged audience obliged.

This is a church coffeehouse venue where the Kennedys have played many times, and although it's a bit of a drive from our Cape Cod locale (a bit more than an hour), it was well worth the drive. The attractive stage backdrop looks nice in the pictures, something I appreciate. We're likely to make a return visit to see Maura and Pete again or other performers on the list of favorites.
