Review Greg Greenway is a very engaging singer-songwriter who plays guitar and piano with skill and finesse, and even picked up the ukulele for one song. He's got a great singing voice, with power and range. He commanded the audience's attention from the moment he stepped on stage, starting out with an easy singalong, and going from there. Many songs were about social justice in America. He knew just how much introduction each song required, moving the show along at just the right pace. He did a range of songs, several with a strong gospel sound, and even one funny song about car traffic in Massachusetts, which I happened to video. He has a new album out, Between Hello & Goodbye, and treated the audience to several songs from it. I've seen Greg once before, when he performed with Reggie Harris doing their duo show, "Deeper Than the Skin," in Harwich on Cape Cod in 2019. It turns out Greg and Reggie have a lot in common, including being 3 days apart in age, and have found a mutual calling in telling the story of racism in America as told from the points of view of a black man and of a white man. Greg tells the story of the tearing down of the Confederate statues and how his growing up in Richmond, VA has influenced everything he has done. His show is profound, educational, and very musically entertaining. And that's not to mention the great brownies and cookies the South Shore Folk Club makes available at the intermission. This folk series has been ongoing for something like forty years, and here's a wish that they keep on going strong for many, many more.
