Review

The show consisted of mainly blues, with a touch of folk and what can be classed under the catch-all term 20th century Americana. Most of the songs included vocals, with a few instrumentals included. Mark told quite a few fascinating stories of musical history as introduction to many of the songs, although he made the audience laugh with a quote from his wife, who reminded him as he was leaving to head out to the concert with his guitar and banjo, to "play more than he talks."

This is the sixth time I've seen guitar master Mark T. Small, resident of the southeastern Massachusetts town of Somerset. He's played three times at the Eastham Library, each time to a substantial and appreciative afternoon audience. Each time he's brought a different variety of instruments. Today was one guitar, banjo, and foot drum. He's a very entertaining player, with an excellent sense of pace, good range of material, and an ability to play so that he sounds like more than one guy, with the bass line and lead guitar going simultaneously. He has great taste in music, stylish taste in clothes, and a really good talent at guitar player faces. Most of all, it's obvious he really loves what he does, and he is really grateful for the opportunity to bring the music of the first half of the twentieth century to members of the public who treasure the chance to hear it.
