Sister Mary Aloysius story / Monkey In a Convent
song starts at 2:28 but the story is a good example of how Ray entertained the audience with true tales of his early life.
Review
What fun to see a free afternoon concert in a chocolate boutique, Tangle Chocolate, in Williamsburg, MA. David Fleming and I have been fans of Ray Mason since 2004. He writes melodic pop tunes about everyday life and plays them on a Silvertone guitar. In the past few years we've seen the Ray Mason Band (the rockier version of his music), and we've seen Ray in his other band The Lonesome Brothers, but we hadn't seen Ray do a solo show since before the pandemic, so we thought it was high time to get to one of his solo shows. It wasn't exactly on the way, but we had seen Graham Parker at the Bull Run in Shirley, MA (northern Mass.) the night before and the drive from there to western Mass. was much shorter than driving from our Cape Cod home, and we liked the idea of the afternoon show time.
Tangle Chocolate opened about a year ago, hosting local musicians on Sunday afternoons. The general store next door provided deli sandwiches. We got there early enough that we were able to chat up Ray about what he's been up to. The boutique is actually a converted car repair shop, decorated with all kinds of curious geegaws. A photo booth, posters giving chocolate philosophy. The show itself consisted of Ray choosing songs from all segments of his long career, including one or two unrecorded new ones. The audience was mostly other Pioneer Valley singer/songwriters. Ray told a lot of stories about his career in music, for example, when he was a young man playing bass in a rock band he performed in Greenland! A highlight of the show was when Rick Murnane, another singer/songwriter from the Northampton area, sang a backing vocal on "I'm Not That Kind of Guy."
The show ended, we bought a small box of Tangle Chocolate's signature chocolate slices, and headed home on the somewhat long but very easy drive back to Cape Cod.
