Review

I never knew what Western Swing was until Concert Going Partner introduced me to that fun and lively genre of music. There's some country in there, some string band, a touch of traditional jazz, and a lot of foot stomping fun.

This band has been around for a while but don't play New England all that often. Whit Smith, guitarist and one of two lead singers, I believe is one of the founders. He grinned from ear to ear for much of the show (I wish I had gotten a picture of this!) and was obviously enjoying himself a lot. On his left was the fiddle player and the other lead singer, Elana James, who also spent a good deal of the time grinning. Next over was the stand up bass player and backing vocalist. He got a bass solo on almost all of the songs. Oh, and the fourth member of the band was the big white dog, who quietly rested on stage in front of the musicians for the entire show.

They played for about an hour and a half without slowing down. There were a couple of slowish ballads but not too many. If you like uptempo, fun songs, this band is for you. Most of the songs were traditional country or swing numbers, but they did a few originals, which I particularly liked. I came away at the end of the show with a new favorite.
