Review
Back in the '80s the Stompers were a favorite band of mine, and of a huge number of people in the Boston area. Then they faded out of my consciousness for a few years, until Head Stomp Sal Baglio opened for Dave Davies at the Sit 'n Bull in Maynard about ten years ago, and his music came flooding back into my life. Since then I have followed Sal's winding career, which always takes many, sometimes unexpected twists and turns, but always comes back to the core, to The Stompers.
This venue isn't the type of place the Stompers played in their heyday. They played dark and grimy, stand-up rock 'n' roll clubs, wonderful places where dreams became reality, where magic happened. How is the Bull Run different? It's cleaner, for one thing, with tablecloths, curtains, and a lot of light. But one thing that is still the same is that the Stompers still bring high energy and a supersized helping of joy to a gig.
The Stompers are Sal Baglio on lead vocal and guitar; Jeremy Brown on piano and backing vocals; Steve Gilligan on bass and backing vocals; Lenny Shea on drums; Dave Friedman on keyboards and backing vocals. They all had a tremendous good time at this show, leading the audience in singalongs and making a group appearance at the front of the stage for "Palisades Park" (check out the video - link above). It would be hard to find a band that has more fun performing than these five old friends.
