Review
Salvatore Baglio had his brush with fame and success as a member of Boston band The Stompers in the early 1980s. For a while there, the Stompers were the hottest band on the planet, playing to packed houses, generating a wildly enthusiastic fan base, enjoying airplay on local radio ... but they never quite had that stroke of lightning that pushed them into the national spotlight. But Salvatore, or Sal as we old Stompers fans call him, never gave up on the music. For Sal, life without music could just not be.
Sal has continued to write and record music across a wide range of the musical spectrum, from rock to experimental music. He'll reunite the Stompers a couple of times a year. That's definitely not what this concert was. Once in a while he gets this talented group of musicians together, including Lenny Shea (the Stompers' drummer), to put on a wildly eclectic concert of originals and rock 'n' roll covers. They actually did one Stompers cover ("Never Tell An Angel"), as well as two Kinks kovers; Sal thinks of the Kinks when he sees me, because it was when Sal opened for Dave Davies at the Sit 'n' Bull a few years ago that our acquaintance began.
Perks Coffeehouse is a tiny hole in the wall on the main street of an undistinguished eastern Massachusetts city. It frequently has music, always free. There's not much room in the corner to put a six piece band. Despite the lack of space, one gets the sense that this small venue really cares about the music. I'm really happy that there are places like this that continue to book live music.
