OMD (Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark) ~ 2011 March 7 ~ Paradise Rock Club, Boston, MA
Concert Going Partner wanted to see OMD, so off we went. I knew very little about this band except for their hit "Electricity." I also hadn't been to the Paradise, which is probably Boston's longest running rock club, in several years, so I was looking forward to that. We considered watching the concert from the balcony, but decided the view wouldn't be very good from up there. Posts blocked the view of parts of the stage, and the soundboard took up what could have been several good viewing locations, so we stayed downstairs. We wound up on the floor about two rows back.
The concert was great! Singer Andy McCluskey sang very well, and did a lot of crazy bopping around the stage. He reminded me a bit of Ray Davies of the Kinks. He had a similar look to Ray, and his lively, energetic stage presence also reminded me of Ray. It was a very lively show -- the energy was helped, naturally, because this was a standing venue. It was a Monday night! It was a very enthusiastic crowd; some fans were following the whole tour. That shows the level of fan involvement with this band.
Who would think a band without a guitar would be this entertaining? An all around pleasant surprise (for me). They finished the show with that one song I knew, "Electricity."
There was an opening act, a female singer named Oh Land with a trio. I think she's Danish. She was a little on the esoteric side of things. She had this odd display of a bunch of balloons with her name on them that lit up in a hypnotic sort of way.
