Mouths of Babes are a married couple (they proudly announce this from the stage) consisting of two wonderfully complementary musicians. Ingrid Elizabeth is the glamor girl of the duo, dressing up in very feminine and attractive clothes, and adding a touch of glitter to her very pretty face. She is also the multi-instrumentalist of the duo, playing a stand up electric bass, ukulele, cajon (drum box), harmonica, and kazoo. Ty Greenstein is the more serious of the two, dressed more conservatively. She provides acoustic and electric guitar and a bit of percussion.
Their voices blend beautifully, and their songwriting also reflects their complementary styles. Ty is the more serious of the two; Ingrid is the more playful. Together their catalog runs the folkie gamut from personal stories to singalongs to serious contemplations on life to joyful celebrations. Their show is thought-provoking, profound, and a whole lot of fun. They have a slogan that says it all: "All the feelings, all the time." They interacted with one another in a way that you can tell what a strong relationship these two women have. They played mostly original songs, including a pleasing assortment of numbers from their first full length album, Brighter In the Dark. They finished their set with a beautiful cover of a song by Holly Near.
This is my second time seeing this fabulous folk duo, having seen them about two years ago at a house concert in Harwich on Cape Cod. I hope they tour again in this area since they are a delight in a live setting.
The First Encounter Coffeehouse is a really good spot to see a show. Just off of Route 6 in the Lower Cape town of Eastham, it's easy to find, and there is plenty of parking 100 yards away in the parking lot for the public library (closed at showtime). I've seen three shows there now, and am looking forward to more. The snacks provided during the intermission were out of this world good.
