Review

The intimate Spire Lobby Series is a perfect venue for this four-piece, all-women band. They are very eclectic in terms of the music they play, ranging from Celtic reels to folk-pop originals, to a cover of rock band The Who. All the songs feature superb musicianship and close harmonies. Since I first saw them in March at the South Shore Folk Music series, they have lost one member. Kelly Riley, who played bass and guitar, has moved on to new musical endeavors in Nashville.

These four musicians display an infectious delight in playing their music and talking about it. They joked around among themselves about consuming Irish whiskey and a whole lot of other topics. They asked for a show of hands from the audience to see how many hadn't seen them before, and then inquired who was from the furthest distance away. (Turned out to be Florida, but Jane herself lives in California.) The band is of mixed backgrounds; Ksenia (guitar and banjo) is Ukrainian; Katrin (drums) is from Switzerland. Life experience varies as well; Felicia had happy memories to share with the Plymouth audience of her wedding in this town a decade or so ago. Held during the winter, her wedding entertained guests from southern states who'd never seen snow.

The Mamas have two albums out and played a number of songs from them, including my two particular favorites, "Moscow to Moses" and "Strange Place." They also have a handful of new songs and hopefully will be putting out another CD soon. The four musicians were all extremely happy to be out on the road again after being shut down by the pandemic, and described how they were able to keep in touch and compose some music together online during the crazy time.
