It was a treat to hear local Americana star Grace Morrison for the second time in four months. The Spire Lobby Series is the perfect venue for her. Her presentation is humble, personal, and intimate, just right for the 70-seat lobby area. Grace introduces every song in very interesting ways, but never bores the audience by talking too long. She has a truly charming personality. One of the reasons I like her music so much is that she is so likeable as a person. Not afraid to show her vulnerable side, she can be funny and sad in turns.
Her songs are folk / Americana. Since she was performing solo without backing musicians, the songs were largely missing the country tinge that some of them have on her records. She mostly played guitar, and sat down at the piano for two songs. I have been attending shows by Grace for quite a few years, and I can say that she has broadened her playing technique and has become a truly accomplished musician. She has always written thought-provoking songs, and is blessed with a beautiful and instantly recognizable voice.
She was wearing a pretty blue dress complemented by a pair of pretty (but apparently very uncomfortable) shoes; the shoes became a running gag through the evening. She played two sets with a very brief intermission about 2/3 of the way through. One of the highlights of the evening was when her mother got up on stage with her and sang backing vocals on one slightly naughty tune.
