The First Encounter Coffee House presented their first live show since before the pandemic. They chose local folkie David Roth for the honor of being their first performer back. I've seen David just once before, when he sat in with Reggie Harris for a couple of songs. Tonight's concert was well attended at this unitarian church music venue, with almost all of the seats filled.
David's been a resident of the Cape for a few decades, since he married a local Cape Cod girl, and has deservedly acquired quite a reputation in the folk community here. He played for about an hour, took a break, then played for another hour, although the second set was probably more talking than music. Some of his banter was extremely funny, especially when he started to read the fan mail he has received that was intended for rocker David Lee Roth (no relation!). His songs range from the personal, to the global, to the serious, to the funny. He has recorded quite a few albums. Some of his well known songs that he performed tonight included Rising In Love, Practice Makes Progress, Summer Cape Cod, Last Day on This Earth.
A highlight of the evening was a guest appearance from singer/songwriter Ric Allendorf, from Middleborough. He opened the second set with his winter song called "Christmas Under The Stairs." It was a pretty song with a nostalgic feel about looking back at childhood. He then provided guitar accompaniment for a handful of David's songs. Having Ric's second guitar rounded out the sound of that handful of songs nicely. Another quick stage appearance was provided by local musician Sarah Burrill who did backing vocals on a song toward the end of the show. David then ended the show with a unique instrumental, playing a melody on the 3-chambered ocarina (check out the photo gallery above for a picture).
I look forward to a return trip to the First Encounter Coffee House this coming February, when Greg Greenway and Kim Moberg will be making an appearance. I'm very happy that this low-key and friendly music venue is back in business.
