Review
I can't remember if I've ever been to a concert on a beach before, but what a fun place to see a show. The late afternoon weather was quite pleasant, not too hot. The sun was still high in the sky over the water, and there were still plenty of beachgoers enjoying the water.
Concert Going Partner and I made the half hour drive from our house in Bourne to this beautiful town in the mid-Cape, where we picked up a sandwich at the nearby Jerk Cafe, a Caribbean restaurant we often patronize when we're in Yarmouth. We've seen Zoë in Truro at a library a couple of times other summers, but this was a lot closer than that. We easily found a parking spot in the extra large parking lot. She and her band were setting up as we arrived, although clarinetist Mark Chenevert was coming down from north of Boston and had to battle traffic, getting to the show about five minutes before the start.
The set list was a very pleasing combo of older Zoë songs, a couple of brand new songs of hers that we hadn't heard before, along with a generous serving of the old cabaret numbers she performs with such enthusiasm and skill. While playing "Welcome To The Circus" she usually does a plate-spinning stunt, but the wind on the beach made it impossible, so she just played the song. The three members of the band all sounded great, as usual. Where I was sitting I couldn't see Liam, the drummer, at all, so I got up and walked around and got some pictures of him from other directions. These three guys obviously enjoy playing with Zoë and they do add an extra element of pizzazz to her show.
Zoë had a number of her previously recorded CDs with her on sale for $10. They're all good, so if you're missing any of her recorded catalog, go take a look at her website and send in your order. A number of the concert goers picked up a CD or two. There were quite a few beachgoers in their beach chairs watching the show, some fairly close to the little stage, others further back closer to the water's edge where the sound of the waves mingled with the band's sound. The sound was quite good considering it was an outdoor show; I think the relatively light wind helped in this regard. I'll go to another show on the beach anytime!
