Review
Maura and Pete have been touring in person more this year, and it was a treat to see them live after watching the online shows that they have kept up with once a month. The duo played a generous serving of tracks from their splendid relatively new CD, "Headwinds," along with numbers covering old and new phases of their catalog.
Just like a DJ spinning records for a party, they had a plan for this evening's show. They started off with a familiar opening number, "Life Is Large," and followed that with some slower, contemplative tunes. The evening had started with a half hour of music from local musicians, open mike style, so Pete and Maura decided that the break between that set and the Kennedys' headlining set was enough intermission for the night, and dispensed with any break in their own set. Instead, during their set, the songs picked up in energy and tempo as they went along, until Pete's guitar virtuosity was on full display on the three-song highlight of "River Of Fallen Stars," "Midnight Ghost," and "Matty Groves.">
The highlight of the half hour open mike that started the show was the two guys (didn't catch their name) who did a sweet cover of the Traveling Wilburys' "Handle With Care." To open the encore set, Maura and Pete had this duo and the other open mike performers come up on stage and sing an enthusiastic version of "If I Had a Hammer" (along with the entire audience). Then they finished up the encore with the classic "Stand," and were joined by a young girl, who turned out to be the youngest of the sisters who used to sing along on this number at the now bygone New Bedford Folk Festival.
The venue, up on the second floor of a converted fire station, while in some ways a traditional coffee house complete with coffee and brownies, was visually unique. The walls in the performance room were beautifully decorated with artwork that looked somewhat like impressionist landscape paintings. The location was easy to find in this small New England town, and once we figured out that the east end of the parking lot on Main St. is basically right next to the venue, we were good to go.
